Below, Jim Aaron explains the difference between solid and engineered hardwood.
Benefits of Solid Hardwood
Solid hardwood is considered the traditional hardwood option, and it features a very simple construction. It is made of a single piece of lumber that is usually ¾” thick. A benefit of solid hardwood is the ability to have it refinished. When you refinish a solid hardwood floor, you are not just extending its life cycle. You can also change the look of your floors by changing the finish to something lighter or darker. When it comes to refinishing solid hardwood, you can only go as far at the tongue on the edge.
Another benefit of solid hardwood is that it features characteristics that no other flooring can replicate. They also add value where other flooring options cannot. Solid hardwood needs to be installed in cool areas of your home such as your bedroom, living room, even a home office space. Installation options include nail down and tongue and groove.
What is Engineered Hardwood?
Engineered hardwood flooring features a modern layered construction. It is made up of several layers that are pressed together cross-grain, which results in increased stability of the plank. It also works to resist wood’s natural tendency to expand and contract due to changes in humidity. You can install engineered hardwood almost anywhere in your home, even in places with high traffic. It is still not recommended for rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms because it is still a wood product after all.
